The days are getting shorter but the soil is still warm and there is plenty to do and enjoy in your September garden! It’s a busy month for planting, dividing and preparing the garden for the months ahead. With a little time and planning, now is the time to give your garden a strong start to next Spring.
Jobs for the garden in September
- Feed and treat Box Hedging with a folia spray to tackle Box Blight. Feed should be 2 weeks prior to any cutting and then feed again afterwards to prevent stress!
- Buy Spring bulbs but only plant daffodils now – leave others until a little later in the Autumn. September is a great month to be planting trees, shrubs and hedging. The soil is still warm but the nights are cooler and the rain makes conditions ideal for encouraging roots to establish before winter.
- Move plants and make changes. You have seen what has and hasn’t worked over the summer and while still fresh in your mind, now is the time to make those changes. Make sure the new planting hole is large enough for the roots so they are in the same position as their original position. Make sure to flood the new hole with water and thoroughly water straight after planting.
- Get weeding! Self sowing seedings are everywhere in September and now’s the time to get on top of things before they take root.
Roberts Top Tip
Don’t be complacent - get in the garden. There is an awful lot to do in September! Don’t go waiting until the Spring. Anything you plant now has the whole Autumn to get well established.
